When VCS creates a log, VCD, or text file specified with the $fopen system function, VCS writes the data for the file in a buffer and periodically dumps the data from the buffer to the file on disk. the frequency of these dumps varies depending on many factors including the amount of data that VCS has to write to the buffer as simulation or compilation progresses.
