The IEEE802.16 broadband metropolitan wireless networks (WiMAX) protocol is intended to provide microwave access for wireless metropolitan area network (Wireless MAN). The protocol uses a random access scheme of mulitple access in the uplink phase. It adopted the binary exponential backoff as the main backofff algorithm for contention resolution. In day's presentation, we model the reservation-based MAC scheme and investigate the parameters affecting contention resolution. A new contention window is proposed and modeled. As well, three backoff strategies are explored and compared: adaptive backoff, single-stage simple backoff, and binary exponential backoff. The analytical model developed uses discrete-time Markov Chains.
